When it comes to Asterisk PBX systems you have many choices. These choices include PBX systems created by the founders of Asterisk (Digium) and those available from individuals/companies that have used Asterisk to create their own Asterisk based PBX systems.

Asterisk PBX systems from Digium

Digium offers five primary Asterisk PBX systems.

  1. Plain jane Asterisk. This is the basic open source Asterisk software.
  2. AsteriskNow. This is the basic open source Asterisk software with a graphical user interface called AsteriskGUI.
  3. Asterisk Business Edition. Asterisk Business Edition is a prosumer version ofAsterisk. It’s an Asterisk PBX system for business that want ultimate flexibility.

Through their SwitchVox line, Digium offers the following Asterisk based PBX systems.

  1. SwitchVox SOHO. This Asterisk based PBX system is design for small offices and even home offices. It supports 1 - 20 users and up to 10 concurrent calls.
  2. SwitchVox SMB. SwitchVox SMB is also a PBX system built from Asterisk. It is a more robust version that supports up to 400 users and 75 concurrent calls.

Asterisk PBX systems from third parties

There are a number of Asterisk based PBX systems that have been developed by third parties. Many of which have been used by millions of businesses. The most popular include:

  • Fonality’s PBXtra. A commercially licensed and support platform with millions of additional lines of code added to the basic Asterisk software.
  • trixbox CE. An open source project as well, trixbox ce combines a number of open source projects into one sleekPBX system.
  • trixbox pro. trixbox pro is a commercially licensed and supported version of trixboix ce.
  • IntuitiveVoice. IntuitiveVoice has built a slick user GUI and additional functionality atop the Asterisk source code.

In addition to the Asterisk PBX systems listed above there are dozens (even hundreds) of smaller, regional offerings that use Asterisk. You might even decide that you want to build your own open source PBX using Asterisk.
