Asterisk VoIP

Asterisk and VoIP

Many individuals associate Asterisk with VoIP.

This is because Asterisk was developed and released during the rise of VoIP (Voice over IP). Asterisk is also closely associated with VoIP because both offer individuals and businesses an extremely low cost way to send and receive calls.

(Note: Just because Asterisk is associated with VoIP does not mean that Asterisk can only use VoIP. Asterisk can also be used in conjunction with the PSTN (Publicly Switched Telephone Network) as well as other telecommunications services.)

Using Asterisk and VoIP

In order to use Asterisk and VoIP you will need a few things:

  1. A version of the Asterisk software
  2. An appliance, VoIP server or tower PC (install and run Asterisk from)
  3. An Internet connection (like a ADSL or T1)
  4. A VoIP service provider (one that supports Asterisk)

Once you have or have decided on each of these components:

  • Your first step will be to install the Asterisk software on your VoIP server or appliance.
  • Once you’ve done that, you’ll want to configure Asterisk.
  • With basic configuration complete, you’ll want to connect yourAsterisk PBX system to your Internet connection.
  • Now that your Asterisk server has a basic set-up and configuration, with access to the Internet, you will want to set-up your VoIP service provider.
  • If you have a VoIP phone you will want to also set-up and configure this device.
  • At this point you should now be able to send and recieve VoIP calls using Asterisk

Obviously there are many more steps involved with the selection, installation and configuration. For that you could reference the Asterisk website, your hardware manufacturers and service providers.
